June Anda – “Black Orpheus” (2015)

“Manhã de Carnaval” (“Morning of Carnival”), is the most popular song by Brazilian composer Luiz Bonfá and lyricist Antônio Maria, which appeared as a principal theme in the 1959 Portuguese-language film ‘Orfeu Negro’ (Black Orpheus) by French director Marcel Camus.
“Manhã de Carnaval” became one of the first compositions identified with Bossa Nova to gain popularity outside Brazil. Particularly in the United States, the song is considered to be one of the most important Brazilian Jazz/Bossa songs that helped establish the Bossa Nova movement in the late 1950s. “Manhã de Carnaval” has become a jazz standard in the USA, while it is still performed regularly by a wide variety of musicians around the world in its vocalized version or just as an instrumental one. In the United States, the song is also known as “A Day in the Life of a Fool”, “Carnival”, “Theme from Black Orpheus”, or simply “Black Orpheus” and goes with two versions of lyrics, the one recorded by Perry Como in 1963 with an English lyric adaptation under the title “Carnival” written by George David Weiss, Hugo Peretti, and Luigi Creatore and later Carl Sigman wrote a different set of English lyrics titled “A Day in the Life of a Fool”, which is not a translation of the Brazilian lyrics, but rather an all new text on a different topic altogether, but to the same unmodified music.
The song has been covered by a plenty of singers, instrumentalists and small orchestras from all around the world, vocally in different languages, including the Romanian pop , jazz, musical, pop-opera singer, June Anda whose version emotionally almost surpasses the original version, especially that she is accompanied by a solo piano played by Ene Catalin.
